Wang Zhanzhan is a suona soloist, professor and doctoral supervisor at the Tianjin Conservatory of Music, where he currently serves as Deputy Director of the Chinese Music faculty. He has received numerous accolades for his performances, including a scholarship from the China National Arts Fund, the 7th Chinese Golden Bell Award for Music, and the Best Performer Award at the 1st Chinese Musical Ensemble Showcase organised by the Ministry of Culture. As the first performing arts student to pursue a PhD in Suona Studies at the Central Conservatory of Music, he is currently studying under the tutelage of renowned suona player and educationist Professor Shi Haibin.
One of the most talented suona players of his generation, Wang has been invited to perform with over 30 professional orchestras at home and abroad, including the China National Traditional Orchestra, the China Broadcasting Chinese Orchestra, the Singapore Chinese Orchestra, the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra and the China National Center for the Performing Arts Orchestra. Known for his ability to blend traditional musical heritage with a diverse range of contemporary styles, Wang was the first suona player to complete a nationwide solo recital tour. He also has explored a range of innovative performance formats, including the production of China’s first wind and percussion-themed musical in collaboration with the acclaimed stage director Yi Liming in 2018.
Recent premieres have included a series of solo and orchestral works, including Looking Heavenward, A Thousand Miles, Da-Di-Jiao, Spring in Henan, Qixi, and Wind and Snow. In addition to performing numerous Chinese orchestral and symphonic works such as Harvest Dance on Strings and Red Sorghum, he also has featured in over 100 video productions including The Butcher, the Chef and the Swordsman and My Best Friend’s Story.
