Tam Yat-sing

Hong Kong-born musicians, Tam Yat-sing holds a master’s degree in music (literature) from the Chinese University of Hong Kong. He began learning piano in primary school and studied under Bernard Hui, then went on to study under Nancy Loo. During his university studies, Tam learned cello under Cheung Ming-yuen and minored in dulcimer under the instruction of Chan Kwok-fai.

Tam studied music composition under the late Yau Siu-pun, and in 2017 his piece Beating the Petty Person was named the ‘Best Work in a Hong Kong Theme’ at HKCO’s ‘Chinese Music Without Bonds – International Composition Competition’. The same piece was also voted ‘Media and Publishers’ Favourite Original Composition’ and ‘Audience Favourite Original Composition’, and was world premiered at the Final Concert of the Competition. Tam’s other compositions include the ensemble piece Xongkoro (commissioned by HKCO), Epiphyllum, Tao Tie (voted as the favourite original work by the audience and orchestra members at the ‘Music from the Heart’ concert series), Lautau Peak, Leaping over the Dragon Gate and As Stars Go By (commissioned by HKCO); composition for harmonica and piano Prelude, Humoresque & Elegy; sextet Spider Lily.

In 2007 he joined the New Tune Chinese orchestra, he is currently the acting secretary, publishing director, and deputy director of the score department for New Tune Music Association.
